The class "VISIONS OF THE NORTHERN MIND" is based on cinema of Russia, Scandinavia and North America. Are there unique trends which bring such different film directors as Bergman and Tarkovsky together? What is the difference in Northern European mentality and sensitivity? Style and film genres discussed.
The themes, concepts and topics:
Parallel realities -- inside/outside. Dualism (Dialectics), Binary Principle (constructivism and deconstruction theory), Folding and Doubling (Deleuze). Film Applications: the antagonism, clash, conflict, cut -- montage. "Pictures in motion" phenomena (Bergson).
Era of Expressionism. The birth of the (modern) visual Northern culture in Europe. German silent films and Russian/Soviet propaganda techniques: The Caligari and Metropolis legacy and Revolutionary Ideologues.
Metaphysics of geography and psychology of the North. Visual, cultural, philosophical tradition. Kierkegaard and existentialism. Protestant aesthetics and Self (pre-history of film in art, sculpture and architectural style). Rational and mystical. Waiting for moving image of the Real.
Hollywood v. Alternative American Cinema. South and North.
The US directors are "northerners" in global context. American alternative film-makers and popular culture.
