I do not know how much of the this limitless field I can cover.There are four major parts: Theatre, Film, Web and SpectActor.
If you take a look at the Glossary, you will notice many new words, which need to be better define to become terminology.
Performance & Ritual (see papers page).
NB. All the classic plays I used for vTheatre productions have natural (historical) limitations: they were written for the linear narrative (stage & public = same time, same space). In VT we have time as space settings. So, I am writing a new play with the hyper structure (in Russian, because it's my pre-American past). ...

My friends, it will take several generations of technological revolution before we will arrive to this new MEDIUM>
Nevertheless, at the end, the spectator will be in the middle of the spectacle, controlling it....creating it. Very much as you do with your fantacies and daydreams.
At this point, my aim just to get the principles of this defined art.
How do they mix—theatre, film , and web?
What is this architecture of the virtual spectacle?
How to deal with the hyper-drama?
Well, I have more questions than answers.

Well, if we are still debating "what theatre is"—you understand that I can only give some rough description of this new virtual animal.
Peter Brook's minimalist definition (The Empty Space):
"I can take any empty space and call it a bare stage. A man walks across this empty space whilst someone else is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of theatre to be engaged."
In short, a "person" walks across a "stage" whilst others are watching "him", and that is all that is needed for a theatre event to take place. Of course, the "person" might be a puppet or even an object (perceived to be endowed with human-like qualities or manipulated to appear so by performers, who are hidden or not).
The stage could be anywhere, as long as some kind of designation is made, and an audience (spontaneous or not) needs to be present. So we have 1) story, 2)performance and 3) audience. Feats of skill, like those in circus or "street' theatre would qualify, for me. All live performances with an audience, including dance, musical concerts, political rallies and even classroom lectures, would qualify.....as long as there is at least one person in the "house" and one performer on the "stage"...even though some may call the latter examples "meta-theatre".
5) Theatre includes a script with conflict (not necessarily a written script) 6) The audienceand performers do not regard the act of theatre as a religious ritual that will gain them any sort of physical (i.e. better crops) or metaphysical (i.e. eternal life) reward as a direct result of the activity.
Theatre:
--an aesthetic event representing an imitation of an action (mimesis)
--within a fictive world
--created by one or more performers who are physically present in the same locale, or space, as
--an audience who is aware of the fictiveness of the world being createdAnother interesting discussion is Johan Huizinga's "Homo Ludens, A Study of the Play Element in Culture" (Beacon Press). He suggests that we might do well to name ourselves 'Homo Ludens' or, Man the Player, rather than Man Thinker....since "play' appears to be our principal activity. He discusses the "play" element as a cultural phenomenon, in language, as a civilizing function, in law, in war, in a way of knowing, in poetry, myth, philosophy and art.
In addition to "teatro", meaning pretty much what theatre means in English. Italians have the word "spettacolo", meaning "the performance in public of a dramatic, musical, choroegraphical, pantomimic, cinematographic or variety that is perceived through sight or sound or both of these factulties by menas of radio, television, cinema and theatre, etc."
Virtual....theatre brings together live performers and live audience, wheras film and television do not.
--So if theatre is basically a performer with an audience in a shared temporal and physical space following a script which contains some element of conflict and which is not ritual, that means the WWF is theatre..."it's theatre if nobody bets on it"! Fiction?
