Ethiopia
FULBRIGHT FULL GRANTS
Region: Sub-Saharan AfricaLanguage English is the official language of Ethiopia and is sufficient for most research topics. Amharic or another local language may be essential for some types of research topics conducted outside of the capital city.
Academic year September through the end of June or early July.
Grant duration/period 10 months. Fulbright grants will begin between August 2009 and March 2010, subject to the approval of the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa. All Fulbrighters going to Ethiopia must attend the pre-departure orientation in Washington DC during the summer of 2009.
Candidate profile Candidates at all degree levels will be considered.
Affiliation It is the applicant’s responsibility to secure affiliation with an appropriate Ethiopian institution. Most research and study by foreign scholars in Ethiopia is undertaken through affiliation with Addis Ababa University. Applications for affiliation may be obtained from the Research and Publications Office (RPO) of the University. Prospective grantees can contact the Cultural Affairs Office of the U.S. Embassy for assistance with contacts in the academic community in Ethiopia and for country-specific information. Requests and proposals for study may be submitted by mail to the RPO or to the appropriate department of the University, along with five copies of the application. Successful applicants are required to pay a registration fee of US$250 or its equivalent in Ethiopian Birr before beginning their research at the University. Upon approval of the affiliation proposal, the student researcher will be notified by the RPO. Candidates should submit their applications at least six months before their intended arrival in Ethiopia. Processing of applications may take up to three months.
