Simple. I rather spend an extra minute trying monologue or scene in class, instead of "lecturing" (the same with drama analysis). Of course, I can send them to the textbook... but here are the (American) educational problems:

First, the HS level of education. They come to college without the basic knowledge of art, literature, history... And the first month is the downfall through the floors, which they were supposed to have... Did you read Shakespeare? What did you read? How well do you know "Hamlet" (for example)? We have to start somewhere? The basics, like Aristotle and the structure of the dramatic (all claases require it).

Second, the lack of the structured knowledge: everything in pieces, not connected. "Why" -- never was asked. Perhaps, because the "reasoning" (analytical) skills are not developed. How Aristle's Poetics is connected to the scene study and so on. How to apply what you know -- theatre is the practitioner's zone. Art is something you have to do yourself.

Also, the difference in terminology... One knows this, another - that. In order for us to work we have to have this common vocabulary, friends. How else can we understand each other?

So, I try to push all those shortcoming out of the classroom. For instance, THR470 Film Directing. This is the first course in filmmaking (how many prerequisites do I have to put in?); so I organised my pages in such a way that if you don't know or don't understand the term, you can go down the path of missing knowledge. Check the Playscript Analysis texts (or if this is too advance for you, down to Dramatic Literature and even to THR200X Aesthetics).

This is the reason, why so many pages were born....

Folks, the hypermedia learning theory is based on dialogic enviroment, i.e. gives you the leading role. You have to be "hyper-active" -- to do the work. First, inquiry -- knowing what you need. Second -- analysis, understanding what you get and ability to integrate it into your existing knowledge. In short, learning on and through internet and web is not easier! The access -- yes, but the rest requires more work than your live classes! (Advising -- use it in addition, use it with the good books next to your computer!)

"Learner-control interactivity" -- they say. Great! As long as you know how to control it! What's why this term "surfing" exists -- God only knows, where you end, while searching...

It will take another ten-twenty years before the technology and content could find each other and the Internet really will be "smart" enough for the "smart" users...
