If you think that I am whinning too much in the prefaces to other textbooks, you haven't see anything yet!

Film directing? How on earth did I get myself into this?

I do not direct films! Any films. Period. and I do not plan to do it. I do not want to direct movies. Not even to write screen plays...

Yes, my MFA from the Moscow Film Institute (VGIK) -- so what?

Do I have to write a textbook simply because thirty years ago I studied filmmaking? I don't think that for more serious crimes one can't be prosecuted in another country! So what that I like films? Who doesn't? Why me? Why I have to write this book?

You see, I didn't want it, to write the book. I still don't.

But once a slave (my Soviet past) one is always a slave.

This is a new directory, kids. Do you know what does it mean? Young, not mature, incomplete, in progress... I had a terrible class last time, the whole Y2K was terrible for me. So, I decided to reorganize it, to make it simple. You tell me, if I am on the right track. For example, I thought that the first assignment should be based on existing script (10 shots max). There are so many good scripts in Haiku (Japanese Traditional Poetry) -- no, it's not my idea (blame Eisenstein).

The webpages will be updated through the Fall 2001, including the New page. I anticipate the struggle to link the old (semi-theory) pages like Montage with the new pages in this directory. I strongly recommend to read first the pages in StageMatrix, which are for THR331 Fundamentals of Stage Direction (required class for THR470 Film Directing).

Thanks to my students in class, who tolerate this work-in-progress process.

Dec. 2003, two years later. Of course, I didn't work much on film directing pages (below see my other interests and projects I was busy with). I teach this course again in the Spring of 2004 and will be updating the files throughout the semester. Please, get yourself the textbook "Grammar of the Film Language" by Daniel Arijon (Amazon link in the right table) in order to follow the references on my pages. Study it on your own, watch the classic films (another class film.vtheatre.net); we have no time to view the masterpieces, only the fragments. Write your own shot script (5 min. -- 10 max).

Theme-thought, according to different playwrights (Shakespeare, Ibsen, Strindberg, Chekhov and so on) and directors (Fillini, Kurosawa, Tarkovsky, Bergman pages).

Connections with other themes (list): family, gender and sex...

Finally, my own practical investigations: shows.vtheatre.net (only recently I began to make themes pages, Don Juan 2003, for example).

And the nonfiction (writing), of course: HIM, Father-Russia, PostAmeriKa, Self, POV, Tech (gatepages are in WRITE directory).

Yeah, yeah, there is more -- "philo" pages, metaphysics: in theatre theory directory, for instance (topics-bar: space, time and etc.)
