Summary

Film-Anatoly
2005 * After so many years of webbing I cannot change the nature of my webpages -- they are what they were from the start; notes, thoughts, points I make for myself for classes and productions. Do they have an independent existence? Maybe, somewhere in the future...

Film Books

The Decline of the West (Oxford Paperbacks) by Oswald Spengler Buy from Amazon.com Since its first publication in two volumes between 1918-1923, The Decline of the West has ranked as one of the most widely read and most talked about books of our time. In all its various editions, it has sold nearly 100,000 copies. A twentieth-century Cassandra, Oswald Spengler thoroughly probed the origin and "fate" of our civilization, and the result can be (and has been) read as a prophesy of the Nazi regime. His challenging views have led to harsh criticism over the years, but the knowledge and eloquence that went into his sweeping study of Western culture have kept The Decline of the West alive. As the face of Germany and Europe as a whole continues to change each day, The Decline of the West cannot be ignored.
The abridgment, prepared by the German scholar Helmut Werner, with the blessing of the Spengler estate, consists of selections from the original (translated into English by Charles Francis Atkinson) linked by explanatory passages which have been put into English by Arthur Helps. H. Stuart Hughes has written a new introduction for this edition.
In this engrossing and highly controversial philosophy of history, Spengler describes how we have entered into a centuries-long "world-historical" phase comparable to late antiquity. Guided by the philosophies of Goethe and Nietzsche, he rejects linear progression, and instead presents a world view based on the cyclical rise and decline of civilizations. He argues that a culture blossoms from the soil of a definable landscape and dies when it has exhausted all of its possibilities.
Despite Spengler's reputation today as an extreme pessimist, The Decline of the West remains essential reading for anyone interested in the history of civilization.
Film books have its own directory, go to Books page or/and to Mining Directory with the buy online titles. Many pages! And with the Amazon affiliation. Or B&N links with different non-film categories.

A thought. Why do I think that my webpages will stay even after my death? Believe it or not, I think that they will exist forever!

Maybe I am mad. Did I invent a new IT (information technology) method? No. but, you know, I keep thinking about the organizational principles of the web, when in place of one webmaster the other step in (the End of the Book in postmodern philosophy -- about the collective creation). In fact, with the Sellassie sites, my children do take it over (away from me).

Well the commerce is the reason why I believe that the pages will stay. Because of the content.

First, my silly writing is a historical testimonials. Would they (1000 years from today) be interested in thoughts and feelings of the dead? Like the old photos.

Second, anything new has to be build on some ground. Think, cinema is only 100 years old! think again. In three generations it became a major language for the next millennium! Here is I accept the idea of mass culture -- the energy of the masses accelarate the time. Time, Forward! We command the time, because our new technology of film is the control over that mysterious dimenssion!

Acting in Film Analysis class *

Film Acting Pages: actors

2004: I do not know when I will have time to write about "acting in movies" -- here is a short list of actors I refer to in Film Analysis class.

Acting is a part of "mise-en-scene" in many textbooks (need definition).

Maybe I will put my comments to the titles and actors later. Anatoly

PS. Watch the movies on your own, we don't do in class.

Film Acting

Nicholson There a short list of titles I show the segments in class, when we get to Acting; here are the samples.

There are other movies with Jack Nocholson could be recommended (use Amazon suggestions).

[ I am not mentioning European film actors here. ]

See Acting I, II, III and Film Directing pages.

[ long list @ film.vtheatre.net ]

I have no pages on individual actors. Only film directors -- Eisenstein, Tarkovsky, Bergman, Kurosawa, Fellini (Film-North).
