You probably know the feeling; sometimes you can't get it. You know this person, you spend years together -- and you still do not know who the hell he or she is! Yes, it could be you not seeing it or simple this person himself doesn't know who he is. There is a lot of this in America; Americans in general does not know what America is and what Americans are all about. Commonly known that American popular culture is teenager-like in nature, i.e. the age when we all hardly know ourselves. Not only Americans do not know themselves, they do everything in order never discover it! No, no, there is no Kantian mystery in it; simply they stay from themselves because the moment you notice youself, there are many serious issues of adulthood you have to face. No, they are not those non-existing Americans I talked before, they are real, but two-dimensional. People, the "mass individuals"; you know, "We, the People"... Don't get confused, the individual rights you hear about have nothing to do with individuality and the personal freedoms have nothing to do with someting like "free minds"... Nothing wrong with the idea of paradise for peasants and workers, on the contrary, 2D-America is the perfect success, which Nazi and Communists couldn't acheave, but nevertheless, this not T. Williams' America. In fact, in the part III I come as close as possible to the America of Individual... and there is no part IV in the book. Of course, America is anti-intellectual in principle; it founded on anti-noble sentiment, on rejection of the class division, spiritual or by birth. This ground can't and shoudln't be changed; writers in America will never replace movie stars.
America is closer to Roman civilization than to Greek culture; in many ways America is naturally communistic, according Alex De Toquevill or Hillary. "Community," not "Individual" is the basis of American freedoms. But how about freedom of choice? And the Bill of Rights? And the myth of the West? And?.. Relax, look at the values of those "individuals" -- what do they want, need, desire? What are their their inspirations and dreams? Look at the "American Dream" or America dreaming (movies); how come those individual hopes have very individuality in them?
Look, I am not about to redicule slogans of French Revolution or negate the good American model for a common man; I know by my previous experience how difficult to make masses happy. Consider it as dislaimer, before your read the chapters of "The Surface"...
Part 2. The Surface
Virginia: 1986-89...The files are still migrating from one part to another in search of their souls-matches, the stories. For example, Communism in America or Cultural Art. Should Academia to be the last in Part 1? What about Prison? There are a banch of small files like Unabomber and Rights, notes.
Of course, to make it one word is to emphasize the dirrefence from "America" and even "AmeriKa" (if you know what I mean). If you surf and haven't read the Part One, you do not know what I mean.
If you read Part 1. The Outside, you know where I live. But to be perfectly correct I live inside my skin and this part of the book about my American Body. We wilthe soul for the SELF Files.
I hope we do not have to argue that such a thing as American Body does exist. "We are what we eat" -- right? There is a lot of American stuff in my body, including my brains. My mind is another matter.
[ image -- Summer 2003: now it's even more abvious what Post-AmeriKa is. What a price to pay for being the only super-power! "American" is losing its meaning, contrary to the cry "America, American, Americans"! America Without Borders, literaly! It works both ways. "The United States of the World" -- and this is why the USA has so many problems with the United Nations. What nations? Do you watch TV? I do not see local news anymore. Cable. Do I live in Fairbanks, Alaska? I know more about Iraq, than about the people on my street. Our fate, our future is decided somewhere else, not here. Am I an American? What is difference between now and thirty years back! What a difference between Americans in Vietman and "Americans" in Iraq! Why am I not surprised? Because I spend my days on the Net, I left my physical time and geographical space long ago. Who am I? ]
