I read Ulysses in the nineth grade in a magazine that was published before 1933. Not the whole book and I had it for one night only. Even in translation I recognized my world, with the broken phrazes and unfinished thoughts, that was what I wanted from the proze. Maybe it's you, Mr. Joyce who made me defect 15 years after the reading of your book.

But I think about you, sir, for a different reason now. I don'k know -- don't they see it or simply do not want to say it, the blank parody on Odyssey, that it why he uses the Latin name, I guess. Very postmodern, my friends. Look at Leo Bloom, what a hero! What about his Penelope? What was his day wandering around Dublin?

Oh, no, I understand that Joyce or myself can't write about "big history" -- no, it's not a subject of epic literature anymore. I understand. But how I didn't I understand my own predicament? Where is my home and wife? Where do I supposed to return? Citizenship? Fatherland? Exile? Where is it all?

What did I expect from my American family? You have to be a mornon or moron, Anatoly, to write "that kind" of book with the happy end. You, the wandering Jew, mister.
