The smallest complex unit in a film is the shot, best described as an uninterrupted strip of film recording some part of an action. It is made up of a series of individual pictures or frames. Each unit (shot) begins when the camera begins to operate and comes to an end when the camera ceases. Should the camera start again, a new shot would be in the making. 2 A shot, therefore, can be quite short or extremely long. It can also be static, in that the camera has not moved in any way on its own axis; or it can be flowing, in that the camera has been tilted up or down or turned to the right or left. A shot can also combine both static and flowing features by having its tripod mounted on a rolling device, such as a dolly or a truck.
