FILM & DRAMA

Fall 2005: Film & Movies @ film.vtheatre.net

Spring 2003: How to Read a Film, James Monaco

The Art of Watching Films

How to use the textbook by Joseph Boggs

The Art of Watching Films has 15 chapters: my best advise -- read the whole book ahead (last five chapters 11-15 are recommended, not required). I'm still working on making web pages and the book closer; watch this page -- it will be updated throughout the semester.
Films/Directors for our class have separate pages (Bergman, for example).

Richard Dyer McCann:
"The film that simply says life is chaos is a film which has not undertaken the battle of art." (p. 7)

I hope at the end of this course you will understand that any film brings more structure to life. The difference between good and bad movies is that the bad ones do it badly.

See Glossary (in addition to film dictionary on the Film-North website) or/and Boggs (p. 436)

Check Writing a Film Analysis in Appendix (p. 423)
And the list of recommended books in Selected Bibliography (p. 445). I have several web book pages for additional reading.

(If you are majoring in Film Studies and plan to go to graduate school, I'll have another page for you).

Please fill out the survey form in order for me to know how much do you know about film and film theory.

Film Acting Pages: actors

2004: I do not know when I will have time to write about "acting in movies" -- here is a short list of actors I refer to in Film Analysis class.

Acting is a part of "mise-en-scene" in many textbooks (need definition).

Maybe I will put my comments to the titles and actors later. Anatoly

PS. Watch the movies on your own, we don't do in class. * FILM HISTORY mini-page *

Film Acting

Nicholson There a short list of titles I show the segments in class, when we get to Acting; here are the samples.

There are other movies with Jack Nocholson could be recommended (use Amazon suggestions).

[ I am not mentioning European film actors here. ]

See Acting I, II, III and Film Directing pages.

[ long list @ film.vtheatre.net ]

I have no pages on individual actors. Only film directors -- Eisenstein, Tarkovsky, Bergman, Kurosawa, Fellini (Film-North).

Sight, Sound, Motion: Applied Media Aesthetics Developed at San Francisco State University, this textbook isolates the five fundamental image elements of television and film--light and color, 2D space, 3D space, time/motion, and sound--examines their aesthetic characteristics and potentials, and structures them in their respective aesthetic fields. The fourth edition adds sections on inductive shot sequences, electronic cinema, and alternative storytelling techniques. ***
