diaspora: A term for mass migration, used particularly in post-colonial studies to denote the scattering of peoples away from their homelands under pressures such as colonization or slavery.

The twentieth century has seen massive ethnic refugee crises due to war and the rise of nationalism and racism. The first half of the twentieth century saw the creation of hundreds of millions of ethnic refugees across Europe, Asia, and northern Africa. Many of these refugees who did not die from starvation or war came to the Americas.
"There are at least 150,000 Ethiopians in the United States, and probably many more, said Central Michigan University historian Solomon Addis Getahun. Successive waves of crisis prompted the shift of population, starting in the 1930s (invading Italian fascists), picking up in the 1970s (drought, famine, and civil war), and again in the 1990s (a protracted border war with Eritrea).
